Dispatch From the Ranch: An Introduction and March Retreat Announcements
Hello Friends,
If we haven’t met yet, my name is Annie Coleman. Nice to meet you. I grew up working at my family’s dude ranch resort, The Golden Horse Ranch, in Westfield, Wisconsin. My grandparents, Ruth and Robert Coleman, were extraordinary people and they created a place that became a real part of their guests’ heart and life; guests who came back year-after-year for multiple generations. Robert and Ruth were dreamers, creatives, animal lovers, and above all, amazing hosts. They did not want to be defined by it, but another part of their story that’s worth noting is that they both were blind. They turned this challenge into tenacity and vision and created a place full of beauty to share with others.
Starting with a few cabins and horses, The Golden Horse Ranch grew slowly over 50 years to an all inclusive rustic resort with 50 horses, 900 acres for riding, 14 two-sided cabins, an adult and kids dining room, a rec hall, pool, lake, and more. Like the retreats at Red Clover Ranch, guests would all arrive together and leave at the same time, creating a community; a sudden village. I learned early on the value of creating a place in nature for guests to slow down, explore, play, and reconnect with themselves. It has been a guiding light throughout my life and I feel grateful that I now have the opportunity to share my version, an extension of their original vision with you.

Golden Hour is a softlanding - slow, spacious days, long, lingering evenings, meandering warmth and gentle valleys. In contemplation and in circle, we navigate “Sometimes Silence,” moving and resting at the intersections of who we are and who we can be through the folkwork of being together.
Come to be held and come to tend your heart, this is space for whatever needs space. A field of exploration, a sacred playground for feeling as a path to getting free, we’re here to remember the small revolutions that happen every day in our bodies and our breath.
This is embodied, permissive, liberatory practice in service of a life of connection.
They’re back! Join authors and teachers Amy Shearn and Sarah McColl from October 10-13, 2025 at the Red Clover Writing Retreat. This beloved writing retreat is open to women and gender-expansive writers of all genres and levels.
Participants can take part in two generative writing workshops, one led by memoirist Sarah McColl and one led by novelist Amy Shearn, as well as afternoon conversations and activities designed for inspiration and supportive practice. There will be open time to go deep into your own writing, explore the two mile-long trails at the Ranch, sweat it out in the sauna, or just stare off into space. Writers can also choose to have 1:1 consultations with Sarah and/or Amy if they’d like another set of eyes on their work.
This time together, and the place where we will gather, originated in creative spark and supportive relationship. Sarah and Annie have been friends for more than ten years. Amy and Sarah have been admirers of each other’s work for fifteen years. Red Clover Ranch’s Annie and Dani’s friendship was born in this valley, where they thoughtfully hold feminine space. Our focus will be on connecting to that vital force that is creativity and coming away feeling re-energized and whole.
